The Moment I Realized I Would NEVER Rely Solely on An Employer Again

It was five days before Christmas and I was laid off--- for the second time in a couple months.

I was working as a paralegal in Tampa.

FIVE DAYS before Christmas.

It was just my daughter and I.

At just six years old, how was I going to explain to her I didn't have enough money to afford Christmas presents this year?

I was devastated. And angry. And resentful.

I had no idea what I was going to do.

I just knew that I hated the bitter taste of failure, poor planning, and the truth that this was ultimately my fault for not preparing to be more financially secure.

If it hadn't been for my family helping me out that year she wouldn't have had a Christmas at all.

The year 2008 probably resonates with you because at some point you were probably struggling also.

That was the year that the economic downturn devastated all of us.

So I don't have to tell you how painful it was.

And to be let go for the second time through no fault of my own was devastating.

It was then that I decided that I would never again rely on one employer for my livelihood.

I've been dabbling with freelance writing since I got out of the Marine Corps but that was the moment that I realized I needed to put my skills to use and do something with it.

It doesn't mean that I didn't spend the next several years struggling to figure it all out, but it was the turning point that defined my path.

I spent all of my spare time figuring out how to make money online. How to take my writing talent and turning it into recurring monthly royalty checks.

Years later being self-employed has saved me numerous times. I still struggled at times, but if I hadn't had a plan B and a plan C behind me I wouldn't have made it.

I say all of this to you because right now is a defining moment in your life.

Life as we have all known it will never be the same.

And if you've never experienced this level of financial panic before, let me tell you that it won't get better until you take personal responsibility for the future direction of your financial peace.
