I JUST SPENT THE PAST 48 HOURS WRITING THREE PIECES OF CONTENT THAT COULD HAVE TAKEN ME 10 MINUTES!
I stressed about it with the usual fears that writers have about not being good enough....fear of the criticism coming my way.....fear that I'm an imposter and I don't know what I'm doing.....blah blah blah.
I took a nap.
I wore a path on my kitchen hardwood floors.
Went grocery shopping.
Rearranged my closet.
Cut and taped 30 cardboard canvases together for artwork I always say I'm going to do (but it never gets done).
Suddenly everything else was a priority and needed to get done right that second.
I did everything I needed to do except for sit my caboose in the chair and write.
Why?
Because I'd put so much pressure on myself to get it "right."
It has to be funny.
It has to be witty.
It has to be insightful.
It has to have at least two intelligent sounding words in it so everyone will know I'm smart.
Ever feel that way?
I wound myself up so tight that I got sick of my own procrastination and insecurities and turned to a technique that's given me massive success.
With this method I've been able to write 10,000 words per day in just 2-3 hours (I even wrote a book about it).
HERE'S THE CHEAT SHEET VERSION:
1.) THINK ABOUT WHAT'S GOING ON IN YOUR LIFE AND BUILD CONTENT AROUND THAT STORY.
This can be the day-to-day tiny incidents that happen to you, like stubbing your toe tripping over an old piece of wood someone left next to the front door.
It can be about how your dog won't do his business unless he's in seventy degree or higher weather unless accompanied by a portable heating blanket and matching booties.
The smaller frustrations, milestones and events in our lives are often the most relatable. Once you start thinking about it, you'll realize you have unlimited content ideas at your fingertips.
2.) USE A VOICE RECORDER AND/OR SPEECH-TO-TEXT SOFTWARE.
There's no disputing that this will skyrocket your word count times ten. But it does something else. It forces you to speak like you would talk to a friend. That's what you want in your writing.
Perhaps even more important is that it gets the content IDEA out of your head and into a tangible blob of clay that you can mold. We waste so much time sitting in front of our computers because we try to do the pre-writing in our heads. We believe it has to come out perfectly the first time. WRONG!
Get it out. Then you can rearrange it because you can SEE it. When it's stuck in your head, it's a vague foggy thing and you can't nail down the ideas you want to convey clearly.
3.) TRANSCRIBE YOUR CONTENT AND THEN READ IT TO LOOK FOR THE LESSON IN THE STORY.
You'll find that when you think about your stories very often you'll find a bigger life lesson you can share with your audience. Sometimes it's clear, other times it's a stretch. It can be a funny, lighthearted lesson. It can be dark.
It can be whatever message you want it to be.
I used this process and created six pieces of content in 17 minutes.
Had I not screwed around this weekend, I could have completed all my content work within 30 minutes and spent the rest of the weekend crafting and working in my yard.
Now, here's the real question...
Having this method that works so well, why wouldn't I automatically resort to this as my "go-to" method all the time?
That's a mindset question and one I'll save for a future post 🙂
